Computing has become a central component of modern scientific research: large volumes of data are generated by increasingly automated measuring devices, which need to be stored, organized and analyzed to extract new insights. New discoveries often only reveal their relevance by comparing them in the context of the already available knowledge, requiring extensive comparison with large public datasets. Computational simulation has become a third pillar of science - next to experiment and theory - which allows researchers to challenge their understanding of complex systems in silico.

sciCORE supports scientists in their work by:

Providing high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructures.

  • Maintain state-of-the-art high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure
  • Maintain state-of-the-art large scale storage systems for large data volumes
  • Maintain an up-to-date software stack
  • Host and operate HPC equipment on behalf of university departments
  • Plan the evolution of the sciCORE HPC environment according to user requirements

Providing direct support to researchers in using these resources.

  • Evaluate researchers' needs and provide advice on most efficient usage of resources (consulting)
  • Support users in computational aspects of grant applications
  • Participate in computational projects of national scope  (e.g. PASC)
  • In collaboration with the SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics, to host and maintain several bioinformatics resources used world-wide

Training scientists using scientific high-performance computing.

  • Provide courses and training in the use of HPC resources
  • Provide project-specific consulting on bioinformatics, statistics, code optimization, with SIB support

Hosting and support of tools for software development, data management and data analysis.
